Cosmetic fillers & a Subtle Lip Flip (Tox): 48-Hour Aftercare That Protects Your Result
By AKKI Aesthetics | August 10, 2026
We hear this a lot in our Williston Park treatment room: people walk in expecting soreness and leave surprised at how comfortable it felt. Now the most important part is simple. For the first 48 hours, don’t rub, massage, or “test” the upper lip area. That one habit is the biggest reason a lip flip looks off, wears unevenly, or doesn’t land as nicely as it should.
Quick reminder: A Subtle Lip Flip (Tox) is a 10-minute cosmetic injectable that gently relaxes the muscles around the mouth so the upper lip can roll outward a bit for a more defined look, without adding filler volume. It’s $112 at our studio.
The first 24 to 48 hours: the exact do’s and don’ts we want you to follow
Right after your lip flip, the goal is to keep the product where we placed it and keep irritation down. In that first two-day window, hands off the upper lip. No rubbing, no gua sha, no “let me just smooth it, ” and try not to press your face into a pillow.
48-hour avoid list (save this)
- Rubbing or massaging the lip area
- Strenuous exercise and heavy sweating for 24 to 48 hours
- Heat exposure like sauna, steam room, hot tubs, and long hot showers for 24 to 48 hours
- Alcohol for the first day (it can make swelling and bruising more noticeable)
- Kissing, oral sex, and puckering-heavy activities for 24 to 48 hours
- Swimming for the first 24 to 48 hours (pool chemicals and friction are not your friend right now)
If you’re commuting through the LIRR or hopping on Northern State Parkway in August, plan for the weather. Williston Park heat and humidity make people sweat without realizing it, so keep errands short, stay out of direct sun, and skip the midday walk that usually turns into a mini workout.
Swelling is usually mild. If you feel puffy, use a cool compress for short bursts, like 5 to 10 minutes at a time. And for makeup, we generally recommend you wait 24 hours before putting lipstick or gloss directly on the lips. Face makeup is typically fine after that first day, just don’t scrub the upper lip line.
Days 3 to 7: the small habits that keep your lip flip looking even
Most people don’t need to “do” much after day two. The work is mostly in what you avoid. Keep going easy on heat, sun, and workouts if you still look flushed or swollen after a class. And keep your upper lip out of the line of fire if you’re doing anything that usually involves lots of mouth movement.
A little weirdness can happen as things settle. Mild numbness, slight asymmetry, or a different feel when you sip through a straw can show up and usually smooths out over days to a couple weeks. That’s one reason our team talks you through expectations up front. People tell us they feel calmer when everything is explained clearly, and that matters even more once you’re back in real life with work, school pick-up, and weekend plans.
If you notice bruising: we usually stick to gentle care. Don’t pick at dry spots, don’t scrub, and don’t schedule a facial massage right away. If we specifically advised you to avoid aspirin or NSAIDs, follow that guidance. If we didn’t, don’t start or stop meds on your own. Just ask us.
Arnica, cool compresses, and lip care that won’t irritate cosmetic injections
After a Subtle Lip Flip (Tox), your best “products” are honestly the boring ones. Think clean hands, a clean pillowcase, and gentle hydration. If you like arnica, that’s a common go-to for bruising support. Just keep it simple and avoid anything that stings or plumps, especially in the first couple of days.
Good choices for the first week
- Cool compresses for short bursts if you’re puffy
- A plain, non-stinging balm if you’re dry
- Gentle cleansing around the mouth, no aggressive scrubbing
Hold off a bit on
- Lip plumpers, strong acids, and tingly “active” products near the upper lip line
- Any device or massage tool used around the mouth area
- Hot yoga, sauna, and long sun sessions, especially during August in Williston Park
If you’re coming by our Williston Park, Willis Avenue commercial corridor location, we’ll often suggest a morning or late-afternoon appointment so you’re not stepping straight into peak heat right after your cosmetic injectables.
When to text us: what’s normal, what’s not, and how we handle follow-ups
Normal: mild swelling, small bruises, a slightly “different” feel when you move your mouth, and a little unevenness as things settle. Give it a little time. We’re aiming for a defined upper lip shape that still looks like you, just a touch more lifted.
Reach out to us right away if you notice worsening pain, spreading redness, signs of infection, or any breathing changes. If something feels off and you’re not sure it “counts, ” still message us. We’d rather answer a quick question than have you spiraling at home.
“I was nervous at first but he talked me through the whole process and made me feel at ease. He was very honest and took his time to make everything look perfect.”
